The Goshen Building Department was established to instill pride in one's property while promoting safe and secure occupancy for its residents.

The department follows and enforces the Indiana Building Code and the The City of Goshen Municipal Code as the codes relate to plumbing, electric, and mechanical structure.

The department issues building permits which are required for major improvements to a property, such as new construction, re-roofing, siding or additions. Contact the Building Department if you are unsure if you need a building permit.

The Building Department accepts cash, money orders or credit/debit cards for permit fees (see details below):

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PERMIT NUMBER IN ORDER TO PAY BY CREDIT/DEBIT CARD. THIS NUMBER IS AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT, 534-1811.

  • If you pay in the Building Dept. (204 E. Jefferson St.), there is a 3% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $2.00.
  • If you pay over the phone via PayGov (1-866-480-8552), there is a 3.95% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $2.50.
  •  If you pay via the internet (https://pay.paygov.us/EndUser/PaymentAgency.aspx?ttid=10931 ), there is a 4.95% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $3.00.

All rental units in Goshen must be registered with the Building Department. Rental units must also be inspected at least once every four (4) years.  Contact the Building Department to find out if your rental unit has been registered and properly inspected.

Before making any conversions of single family homes, call the department to check for zoning compliance.

The Building Department also handles licenses for electrical and heating contractors.
