Goshen Fire Department
The Goshen Fire Department was established in 1862 and consisted of all volunteers. It was called "Reliance German Fire Company #1."
In 1916, the department became motorized with the purchase of a fire truck which cost $5,500.00.
In 1922, the department employed enough fire personnel to establish two platoons and the volunteers were phased out.
Since 1982, the department has has had three fire districts at three stations. Each station has a medic unit:

The Goshen Fire Department is staffed by 52 professional firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians. The department has three pumpers, one ladder truck, one reserve pumper, one rescue truck and one boat. The Goshen Fire Department is dispatched by the Elkhart County Dispatch Center.

Restriction on Open Burning
There is no leaf burning allowed in the City of Goshen. Burning of twigs and some household items is allowed if burned in an enclosed container with a screen or wire mesh top. Burning is restricted to daylight hours, am to pm. If the burning endangers the health of another citizen to the extent it generates a neighbor's complaint, it will not be permitted.

The Fire Department accepts debit/credit cards for patient billing. There are fees associated with this process:
- If you pay at Central Office (209 N. 3rd St.), there is a 3% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $2.00.
- If you pay over the phone (1-866-480-8552), there is a 3.95% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $2.50.
- If you pay via the internet (https://pay.paygov.us/EndUser/PaymentAgency.aspx?ttid=10934), there is a 4.95% convenience fee with a minimum charge of $3.00.
If you have any questions about fire safety, feel free to contact the Goshen Fire Department’s Inspection and Prevention Bureau at 537-3827. They will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have about the use of smoke detectors or other fire safety-related matters.
In case of an emergency dial 911. The non-emergency business number is 533-7878. The office hours are 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Tours of the stations are available. Please call 533-7878 to schedule a tour. The fire department will also send a representative to your classroom or place of business.
